Kansas
Kansas is a road-trip state with wide horizons, prairie landscapes, small towns, aviation and space history, college sports, murals, barbecue, frontier sites, byways, and big-sky photography. Kansas Tourism divides the state into six travel regions and highlights byways, festivals, museums, murals, agritourism, Native American heritage, Old West sites, state parks, wetlands, birding, gravel cycling, rodeos, sunflowers, food, lodging, weather, and road-condition resources.
The Flint Hills are the signature natural landscape. Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve protects a nationally significant remnant of an ecosystem that once covered 170 million acres of North America; the National Park Service notes that less than 4 percent remains intact, mostly in the Kansas Flint Hills. Visitors can tour the 1881 Spring Hill Ranch house, see the 1882 limestone barn, hike, use a cell-phone tour, watch for bison from a safe distance, and visit in spring for flowers or fall for prairie color.
Kansas also rewards themed routes. Wichita pairs the Keeper of the Plains, museums, breweries, gardens, and the Sedgwick County Zoo; Topeka adds the Kansas State Capitol and Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park; Lawrence and Manhattan are college-town stops; Hutchinson is known for the Cosmosphere and Strataca; Dodge City and Fort Larned lean into frontier history; Monument Rocks, Little Jerusalem Badlands, Cheyenne Bottoms, and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge give photographers and birders strong reasons to detour.
Spring and fall are most comfortable for scenic drives and prairie hiking. Summer brings festivals, sunflowers, heat, and storms; winter is quieter but can make open landscapes starkly photogenic. Visitor Tip: Check KanDrive road conditions and the weather before long rural drives, and plan fuel, food, and water stops in advance when crossing the Flint Hills, western Kansas, or wildlife-refuge areas.
