Uzbekistan is the classic Central Asian Silk Road itinerary, anchored by Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, and Shakhrisabz. The official Uzbekistan.travel portal highlights historic cities, architecture, cultural heritage, folk art, cuisine, pilgrimage tourism, ecotourism, festivals, registered guides, and tourist routes; it also lists a visitor call center and a visually impaired version of the site. First-time travelers usually fly into Tashkent, use high-speed or overnight trains where available, and then spend two nights each in Samarkand and Bukhara, with extra time for Khiva because it is farther west.
UNESCO lists seven World Heritage properties in Uzbekistan: Itchan Kala in Khiva, the Historic Centre of Bukhara, the Historic Centre of Shakhrisyabz, Samarkand - Crossroad of Cultures, the Silk Roads: Zarafshan-Karakum Corridor, the Western Tien-Shan, and the Cold Winter Deserts of Turan. Samarkand's Registan, Gur-e-Amir, Bibi-Khanym Mosque, Shah-i-Zinda, and observatory sites show the Timurid period at monumental scale; Bukhara rewards slower walking around Poi-Kalyan, Lyabi-Hauz, trading domes, madrasas, and caravanserai streets; and Khiva's walled Itchan Kala is especially strong for sunrise and blue-hour photography.
The U.S. State Department advisory issued January 26, 2026 lists Uzbekistan at Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions, and says U.S. citizens may travel visa-free for business and tourism for up to 30 days as of January 1, 2026. It advises modest dress at religious sites, use of officially marked taxis or rideshare apps, caution with unsolicited guides or services, a passport with three months' validity beyond the permitted stay, and currency declaration rules for large sums.
Spring and autumn are the easiest seasons for mosque courtyards, desert-edge towns, and long walks; summer can be intensely hot in Bukhara and Khiva, while winter is quieter but cold. Many monuments have uneven stone, steps, and limited shade, so comfortable shoes, water, sun protection, and layered clothing matter. Visitor Tip: Build the trip around train availability and spend at least two nights in Bukhara or Samarkand; day-tripping the headline cities misses the quieter early-morning and evening hours when the architecture is at its best.
